Summary : History – Caesar Octavian

The aftermath of Julius Caesar’s assassination left Rome in a state of uncertainty. With Caesar’s heir, Octavian, entering the picture, the power dynamics shifted, setting the stage for a new era of political maneuvering and conflict. As Octavian navigates the treacherous waters of Roman politics, alliances will be forged and broken, ambitions will clash, and the fate of the Republic hangs in the balance.

History – Caesar Octavian

As expected, Marc Antony hoped to inherit Caesar’s legacy. His speech at his friend’s funeral, along with the riot he incited, were part of his plan. Unfortunately for him, Caesar specifically named his heir in his will. The dictator bequeathed his titles, fortune, and office to his nephew, Caesar Octavian. Octavian, just eighteen, was studying in Greece. Marc Antony hurried to advise him not to move. Octavian disregarded this advice. Feeling fully capable and entitled, he rushed to Rome to claim his inheritance.

Octavian’s arrival, unsurprisingly, didn’t thrill Marc Antony. He hid a grimace, opened his arms to the young man in a welcoming gesture, and hugged him with a desire to suffocate him. Octavian seemed an even more dangerous rival than he had imagined. Octavian was handsome, charming like his uncle, and unafraid to dismiss obstacles.

Moreover, Octavian – to compound matters – was not a fool. When Marc Antony embraced him in a touching display of friendship, Octavian responded politely but coldly. He was annoyed by Antony’s tone, treating him like an elder brother offering affectionate advice to a younger sibling.

When Antony attempted to intimidate him, Octavian hinted that he no longer believed in bogeymen at his age. Marc Antony abandoned his pretenses. After all, he reassured himself, Octavian was hardly more than a child. He had no powerful allies in Rome and no army. He might try to thwart me, but it won’t be serious.

Cicero held a different view. He knew how easily power shifted in Rome. Like a rock, while the weak faltered and the rich or cunning rose to honors, he remained steadfast in his position! No wonder: Cicero knew how to navigate skillfully. Now that Caesar was dead, the astute man awaited an opportunity to capitalize on Rome’s turmoil and turn it into a victory for himself and the Senate. When he met Octavian, Cicero thought to himself, “Here’s a young man who might serve my plans well.” And he smiled benignly at him.
