Summary : History – Darius against Alexander

In the annals of history, few figures loom as large as Alexander the Great, the Macedonian conqueror who carved out one of the largest empires the world had ever seen. From his early days as a student of Aristotle to his legendary conquests across Asia, Alexander’s life is a testament to ambition, courage, and the pursuit of greatness. This journey explores the remarkable exploits of Alexander, from his battles against the Persian Empire to his transformation into a near-mythical figure revered by generations.

History – Darius against Alexander

Continuing his advance southward, Alexander captured one city-state after another along his path. In less than a year, he reached Syria. There, at Issus, in a narrow plain between the mountains and the sea, he encountered the bulk of the Persian forces.

King Darius had come in person, determined to end once and for all his audacious invader. Standing on his chariot, with an air of assurance, he stood at the center of his troops, surrounded by his personal guard, the cream of his warriors. He paraded proudly, but Alexander, always direct and impatient, wasted no time admiring him.

He unleashed his cavalry on the startled and terrified Persians with such force. Too bewildered to fight, they sought salvation in desperate and inglorious flight. Darius himself leaped from his chariot, seized a passing horse, and galloped furiously, in the opposite direction of the enemy.

As night fell, the victors began to feel fatigue. They then thought of visiting Darius’s camp, and its splendid tents. Alexander entered the one previously occupied by the king. It was a masterpiece of its kind. Alexander found it very much to his liking. Being a king himself, he took royal pleasure in taking a royal bath and used all the little royal pots, made of solid gold, containing various creams and perfumed oils reserved for strictly royal epidermises.

After this royal bath, from which he emerged invigorated, Alexander went to the grand pavilion where he lay among the silk cushions. With a nonchalant gesture, he reached out and took a pear. Then he poured himself a cup of wine, emptied it, and sighed with pleasure. “At last,” he murmured, “I pamper myself like a king!” or something to that effect.

It must be said that it was the first time Alexander had an aperitif. Be that as it may, from that moment on, the rugged conqueror began to appreciate the luxury and charms of power. Darius’s wine had seriously turned his head, and for a long time.

Thus, after his Egyptian victories, he gave his name to a city in Egypt founded by him: Alexandria, and eventually came to consider himself truly a god on earth, at least on the land of the pharaohs. He began to dress and live like the kings of the East, whose subjects prostrated themselves in their presence and called them “lord” with great reverence.

One fine day, however, Darius had the foolishness to remind him: he proposed a definitive peace on condition that Alexander accepted to share with him the empire of Asia Minor.

Alexander shook himself. He tore himself away from the Egyptian delights and returned to Syria with the firm resolution to take Babylon. Just for fun. And also to teach Darius a good lesson.
