Summary - History – First Appearance of Man

The emergence of mankind marks a pivotal moment in the annals of history, dating back some 400,000 years ago. As we envision a scene of primitive life at the entrance of a cave, we witness the dawn of human civilization amidst the flickering flames and scattered remnants of meals. Through the discovery of artifacts and remnants, such as those of Peking Man, we gain insight into the early stages of human existence, characterized by survival instincts, rudimentary tools, and communal gatherings.

History – First Appearance of Man

Imagine, approximately 400,000 years ago, a few human beings gathered at the entrance of a cave. They have lit a fire and are roasting deer meat while around them lie scattered remnants of previous meals: bones of wild boars, monkeys, marsh bulls, and so on. One of the women is busy picking edible berries from the bushes nearby. A man, sitting near the hearth, crudely carves a femur which he will use shortly to cut pieces of meat when the game is cooked to perfection. The cave in question was not unique in its kind.

There were several located in China, near the place where Beijing now stands. Thus, the man who lived there as a troglodyte and whose remains were found on the spot was baptized Peking Man. Peking Man did not leave much behind. However, the coal, berries, stones, and bones found at his habitat site have provided an idea of his daily existence. It is known that Peking Man fed on both plants and meat, that he was able to crudely fashion tools and weapons, that he could kill large animals, and finally, that he knew how to light and fuel a fire. Fire allowed these early humans to keep warm and also to keep ferocious beasts at bay during the night.

They probably also used the magical flame to cook some of their food. Instead of devouring the animal they had just killed on the spot, they probably took the trouble to light a fire around which they gathered. Such a meal was probably the origin of family gatherings… and subsequently, of “neighbors.” Tasks were divided, pleasures were shared. The language, then, must have been very basic. Nevertheless, with a few simple words and gestures, adults could pass on some of what they had learned to their children.

Perhaps also, when game was scarce, these primitive beings resorted to eating human flesh. It was a matter of survival… Among the bones left behind by Peking Man, some bear unmistakable traces: they were opened very neatly with a tool. This undoubtedly shows skill and intelligence. Thus, primitive as he was, Peking Man belongs to the history of humanity.
