History – Greek Gods and Heroes

From island to island, from city to city, the minstrels of that time roamed Greece, captivating audiences with tales of Greek Gods and Heroes. Wherever they struck – palace or vast mansion – they were warmly welcomed. In return for their songs, they were offered food and shelter. Truth be told, people were bored.

No theater performances, no books! So the minstrel entertained his hosts by recounting legends of a distant past that would otherwise have fallen into oblivion. His repertoire was varied: heroes’ exploits, tales of war, myths, stories of the Greek Gods.

The lord of the place and his guests gathered around him. It was usually after dinner that he was invited to sing. Often, he would start with the siege of Troy. He reminded his audience of one of the most well-known causes of the war: Paris, a Trojan prince, had abducted Helen, wife of the king of Sparta, Menelaus, one of the most beautiful women in the world.

Agamemnon had called for arms, and the Greek fleet had prepared to depart. Then came the list of famous heroes who embarked on the Achaeans’ ships. Each had a biography rich in adventures. The minstrel mined them like a vein and could thus recount a new episode every evening. He sang of Agamemnon, who, returned from Troy as a triumphant, actually only returned home to be assassinated by his wife. Or Achilles, the famous Greek warrior, who killed Hector, the champion of the Trojans.

Or Odysseus, the most cunning of the Greeks who, after the fall of Troy, traveled the world for ten years before returning to Ithaca, his homeland. These epic poems, made up of several assembled episodes, were known as rhapsodies.

The most famous among the poets of the time, the one whose name has come down to us surrounded by glory, is Homer, an Ionian from Asia Minor. No one has ever known exactly where he was born and where he spent his childhood. Perhaps he was born in Smyrna.

In any case, around 750 BC, he wrote two epic works, two rhapsodies that quickly became the bedside book of the Greek world. After a few years, no one was unaware of these two remarkable poems: the Iliad and the Odyssey.
