Summary : History – Han-Yang

The story of Han-Yang, the ancient capital of Northern China, unfolds against the backdrop of dynasties, divination, and divine approval. P’an Keng’s quest to establish a central capital reflects the aspirations of a civilization striving for cohesion and prosperity. Situated in fertile plains and surrounded by majestic mountains, Han-Yang symbolizes the resilience and ingenuity of ancient Chinese civilization.

History – Han-Yang

For many generations, the ancestors of P’an Keng had considered themselves the kings of Northern China. However, this royal family, which constituted the Chang dynasty, had never governed from a central capital. Around 1380 BC, P’an Keng decided that it was high time to establish one. He believed he found the perfect location in Han-Yang. Located in a bend of the Yellow River, stretched fertile plains, ideal indeed for agriculture and livestock.

Moreover, the mountains in the hinterland could provide wood and game. With the site seeming perfect to him, P’an Keng only had to worry about one thing: whether his choice would be approved by the gods and his ancestors. So, P’an Keng sent for a diviner.

P’an Keng began by asking the questions that troubled him: Should a capital be founded in Han-Yang? – Was the last dream he had a good omen? – Did Changti, the almighty god, approve? – Was the founder of the Chang dynasty in agreement for a change of capital? And P’an Keng could not contain his joy when, to all his questions, the divine interpreter answered “yes,” most convincingly. Han-Yang existed long before the Changs made it their capital.

It was a city that, like many others in China, had developed over the centuries. The numerous mountains that separated the regions from each other forced them to develop each in their own way. In the deserts, steppes, and mountains that blocked China to the west and north, nomadic tribes raised horses and sheep. South of the Blue River, the Yangtze River, wooded hills and a semi-tropical climate allowed populations to live more easily from hunting and fishing.

Even after the introduction of rice into the country around 2000 BC, many years passed before the southern Chinese could make sufficient use of the land to meet the needs of numerous communities. The most populous areas were scattered in the great plain and the high valleys of the Northeast. There, the soil was rich and agriculture easy.

The land retained moisture. Each year, however, the Yellow River or Huang He overflowed and fertilized the plain. It deposited abundant yellowish alluvium along its course, hence its name. Yet the river played tricks on the riverside populations that depended on it. Its floods were sometimes so strong that they swept away dikes and villages. Thus, people both loved and feared it at the same time. Happiness in this world is never perfect!
