Summary : History – Hannibal and Rome

The tale of Rome and Carthage is one of ancient history’s most gripping sagas, marked by epic battles, cunning strategies, and larger-than-life characters. At the heart of this conflict lies the audacious journey of Hannibal, who defied the odds by crossing the Alps with his Carthaginian army. This daring feat set the stage for a series of dramatic encounters that would shape the course of history in the Mediterranean world.

History – Hannibal and Rome

Hannibal reached the foot of the Alps at the beginning of autumn. He began to climb along their steep and treacherous slopes at the onset of the first snows. This incomprehensible man seemed to do everything backwards. By the end of September, the Carthaginian forces entered the Po Valley, north of Italy. The hardest part was over: Hannibal had conquered the Alps. But out of the 40,000 men he had initially, only 26,000 remained!

However, against his diminished forces, the Romans could oppose 770,000 soldiers, citizens, or allies! Nevertheless, thanks to clever tactics, Hannibal outflanked the Roman legions sent against him and defeated them soundly. It was a resounding victory. It seemed that Hannibal had only to march on Rome to take it. Of course, he did none of what was expected of him and turned away from the city.

Perhaps, in hindsight, it was wiser. Hannibal indeed possessed none of the cumbersome war machines – battering rams and catapults – necessary to break through the defenses of a great city. Hannibal therefore contented himself with battling across Italy. It became a sort of routine in the following years. Whenever the Carthaginian leader encountered a Roman army, he inflicted a cruel defeat upon it. It was the first time that the Roman Republic suffered such setbacks.

The Senate and the Assembly agreed to appoint a chief general, Fabius Maximus, whom they charged with guarding the city’s defenses. Fabius knew both the strength and weaknesses of Rome. It would be futile, he explained, to send more troops to fight Hannibal. This would only result in further losses. Rome could win the war by simply waiting.

Time would work in its favor. Sooner or later, Hannibal would run out of soldiers and supplies. But the Romans were far too impatient to follow his wise advice. They called him Cunctator, the Delayer. New leaders were elected, only men of action this time! Full of confidence, they marched on Cannae – where Hannibal was then with an army of 54,000 men, straight into a trap! The Roman companies relied on their numerical strength, intending to rush en masse at Hannibal’s frontline, pierce it, and annihilate it.
