Summary : History – Metal Revolution

The Metal Revolution stands as a pivotal era in human history, marking the transition from primitive tools to the utilization of metals for various purposes. This period witnessed significant advancements in agriculture, craftsmanship, and trade, shaping civilizations across the globe.

From the Near East to Central America, the discovery and exploitation of metals revolutionized economies, social structures, and technological capabilities. As societies mastered the art of metalworking, they unlocked new potentials for innovation and progress, laying the foundation for the complex civilizations of the future.

History – Metal Revolution

To begin with about Metal Revolution, the peoples of the Near East set out to cultivate wild barley and wheat, but they soon began to grow vegetables and plant fruit trees. After the sickle appeared, then the hoe, and then the plow. At the same time, they learned to irrigate fields. The art of cultivating the products of the earth spread to other countries where, thanks to the benefits of agriculture, life was transformed.

At the same time, the peoples of Asia also discovered the secret of sowing and harvested the species of fruits and vegetables specific to their country. The “Indians” of Central America were in the process of introducing a primitive but nourishing wheat. These same Indians were later the first to harvest potatoes, tomatoes, pumpkins, and peanuts.

At that time, when life was marked by the development of agriculture, it was called the Neolithic, or “new stone age.” As with previous periods, this name corresponds to the tools of the time. Already, men began to build their houses, houses that had roofs, flooring, chimneys, and also places reserved for food stocks. Farmers and plowmen continued to surround themselves with domestic animals.

As food became less of a problem, man had more time to worry about practical everyday objects. He sought to improve them. Pottery developed. Objects of all shapes and colors were shaped from clay, decorated with various designs. Women began to spin and weave. Clothing benefited from this. Another consequence: some men, abandoning hunting, began to work in the fields to grow cotton or to intensively raise sheep for their wool.

Therefore, land cultivation, village construction, animal domestication, pottery expansion, and woven clothing production are, in essence, the advances that marked the Metal Revolution. This civilization, originating from the Near East, spread through travelers, traders, or explorers. Of course, other countries did not adopt it immediately. On the contrary, each adapted it to its own needs.

Nevertheless regarding Metal Revolution, it must be remembered that it quickly spread to the entire Mediterranean coast, Africa, Europe, Central Asia, India, and the Far East. However, in the high plateaus of Turkey and Iran, new discoveries further improved the condition of man. Researchers had managed to extract copper from ore. Already, they were beginning to fashion jewelry and small instruments with this metal.

Then cups and bowls were cast. After copper extraction came silver, tin, and lead. Bronze, an alloy of tin and copper, was probably discovered by accident. However, stone and baked clay remained the basic materials for a long time. Only a few privileged individuals used metal objects. Nevertheless, the impulse was given: the exploitation of metals would develop in turn.

Progress being underway, nothing could stop it. For several thousand years, numerous other discoveries provided humanity with new sources of energy. The prehistoric man owed his survival only to his physical strength. And now, animals were working for him. He learned to harness oxen to his plow and horses to his sled. He learned to use donkeys, reindeer, and even camels.

Then, with the invention of the wheel, he could move himself without fatigue and easily transport heavy loads over long distances. With the sail, man set out to conquer the sea. Easy-to-apply mechanisms allowed him to draw water and lift considerable weights. Even before metals and the wheel had influenced practical life, men, now capable of producing a surplus of food, reserved it for special categories of people – priests and artists, for example – whose profession did not allow them to cultivate the land themselves. It was the era of barter. Work was paid in kind.

Of course, it was necessary to keep accounts, administer community property, and regulate activities. It was from this kind of community that later civilizations constituting proper history were to emerge.
