History – Solon the wise

Subsequently, the people refrained from demanding other laws. However, there was much talk of waging war against the nobles and dispatching them a bit, just to teach them a lesson. The nobles, sensing which way the wind was blowing and not feeling entirely reassured deep down, thought of safeguarding themselves. However, both the people and the lords needed a leader to guide them.

They all went in search of the ideal man. And they all found him. Astonishingly, it was the same individual: Solon! The lords chose Solon because, like them, he belonged to the aristocracy. Moreover, he was the son of a merchant and, as such, was knowledgeable in business and understood the value of money. On the other hand, the people chose Solon because he was wise and also a poet who spoke out against injustice and the love of profit.

Solon had traveled far and wide. He had seen, with his own eyes, the ravages caused by civil wars. He hastened to declare that he refused to become a tyrant and had no intention of favoring one party over another. But if he did not want to take sides against anyone, at least he could work for the well-being of all.

By a first decree, Solon freed the farmers who had fallen into slavery and prohibited the seizure of bodies for debts. He also limited the extent of land that a man could own, which forced the nobles to stop seizing those of small farmers.

Then Solon abolished Dracon’s laws and drafted new ones for the Athenians. When these laws were made public – they were first inscribed on wooden tablets and then on stone columns erected in the center of the city – no one exclaimed that they had been drawn with blood.

Solon’s legal code was perfectly just and reasonable. It created a Council of Four Hundred to administer the city and oversee the judges. All citizens could become members of the council. Likewise, all had the right to vote in the Assembly.
