Summary : History – The Asian gods

In the ancient world, the Greek civilization experienced profound changes that reshaped its beliefs, culture, and societal norms. One significant transformation was the shift in religious practices, as Greeks began to explore and embrace the gods of Asia and Egypt. This cultural exchange not only influenced spiritual beliefs but also impacted various aspects of daily life, from art and literature to social interactions and entertainment.

History – The Asian gods

Many Greeks, too, turned to the gods. However, it was increasingly difficult to believe that the worn-out gods of Olympus cared about the fate of unfortunate mortals. The gods of Asia seemed to promise more. The Egyptian deities, too, were attractive. The goddess Isis, among others, had very beautiful eyes! On the other hand, Amun, the sun god, seemed a bit frightening.

But it didn’t matter! All these gods guaranteed their followers a very happy existence in the afterlife. This was a cheerful prospect for Greeks who dreaded the future and did not appreciate the life they led on earth. So, they came each day in greater numbers to worship the new gods. Alongside this spiritual evolution, another one could be observed on the material plane.

The Greeks, who had always led a very simple life until then, began to take an interest in fine clothes, luxurious furnishings, and well-laden tables. Since the cities no longer offered them anything valuable or important, at least they had the resource of entertaining themselves and having a good time! A change also occurred in the theater, where the usual comedy no longer made anyone laugh.

If politics no longer gave reason to joke, at least the Athenians could make themselves the target and mock themselves or, even better, their neighbors! Menander, a fashionable comic poet, created the comedy of manners. People enjoyed seeing the more or less funny events that could happen to Mr. Everybody represented.

Menander excelled in portraying fathers who tightly held the strings of their purses, wives with sharp tongues, sons who tried to extort money from their dads, and also sly servants who caused chaos everywhere and secretly rejoiced in it. Generally, the witty reflections of the actors provoked shouts of joy from the audience. The citizens with serious minds, however, did not loosen up. They were seen strolling seriously in the groves surrounding the stadiums, with noses as long as a cubit and a darker demeanor than a sack of soot.

That’s because they, too, remembered the “good old days”. In the past, in these same gardens, they listened to Plato and Aristotle. There was hope, then, of unraveling the various mysteries of the universe. What remained of that hope today? Nothing at all! A group of philosophers, who called themselves the Cynics, declared that the only way to be happy was to be reasonable and to disdain social conventions.

They endeavored to reject anything that might corrupt man. At the top of the list, they wrote down money, then art, science, poetry, politics, and music. Each time the Cynics had a new discussion, the list grew longer. These heroic philosophers were proud to do without so many harmful things without which most people could not live.
