History – The City of Carthage

In 264 BC, the Roman popular assembly held a particularly noisy and tumultuous session. Carthaginian troops had attacked Messina and seized it. This city sought Rome’s help. The Senate, composed of wise patricians, recognized Carthage’s strength and was hesitant about military intervention.

The assembly, however, was eager to confront the enemy: it voted in favor. The curse once uttered by Dido, queen of Carthage, was coming true: her city and the city of Aeneas were destined to clash! The war between Rome and Carthage was terribly deadly.

Starting from a small city in Sicily, it would expand to involve half the Mediterranean world and pit the greatest powers of the West against each other. Once begun, it lasted for a hundred and nineteen years, ending only with the annihilation of Carthage.

Carthage was perhaps the wealthiest city in the world at the time. Three times the size of Rome, it boasted well-laid streets lined with sumptuous houses, as well as two carefully constructed ports: one for merchant ships, the other for war vessels.

But Carthage also had an unsavory reputation for dishonesty and cruelty. The city’s god was Baal, a deity of gold and fire with insatiable greed. Standing in the city center, his gigantic bronze statue reached out its hands to receive human victims offered in sacrifice by hurling them into the flames.
