History – The great city of Chang

In Han-Yang, The City of Chang, the upper classes led a life vastly different from that of the rural inhabitants. These privileged individuals lived in wooden houses, built on beaten earth platforms. Their clothing was made of canvas, wool, or fur, with the wealthiest donning silk garments. Silk, even at that time, was one of China’s characteristic products. In Han-Yang, The City of Chang, numerous artisans could be found.

Some carved delicate stone statues, while others crafted pottery articles using a lathe and cleverly designed kilns. However, the most admired were undoubtedly the bronze vessel manufacturers. By 1100 BC, the Chang bronze artisans were capable of producing basins, vases, cups, and bowls of all shapes and sizes. They cast magnificent bells.

The objects that came from their hands were such masterpieces that none have surpassed them since. Bronze vases were highly fashionable at that time. Moreover, religious rites demanded the use of cups and basins adorned with special designs. Offerings of wine and food had to be made in specific vessels, under penalty of displeasing the gods. The priests’ attention to properly using the appropriate cup or bowl marked a growing religious concern. All ceremonies were conducted according to an increasingly strict ritual.

The sacrifices then in use were performed in temples and small chapels. The most impoverished contented themselves with offerings of food, water, or wine, contained in simple earthenware vessels. The wealthy, on the other hand, used the beautiful bronze vessels mentioned earlier. They often sacrificed large animals such as sheep, pigs, or dogs. Some of these sacrifices aimed to honor the gods present in the forces of nature. The earth, the wind, the waterways all had their gods, themselves surpassed in importance by Chang-ti, The City of Chang, the “supreme ruler above”.
