History – The Iliad and Odyssey

Their theme was far from new… In The Iliad and Odyssey, Homer shows us Achilles quarreling with Agamemnon over booty taken from a neighboring city of Troy. Furious and feeling insulted, the hero then refused to fight against the Trojans. From that moment on, the Greeks began to lose battles.

Many warriors were killed. Achilles, however, continued to sulk. It took Hector, the Trojan champion, killing Achilles’ best friend for the Greek hero to consent to leave his tent. Forgetting his wounded pride, he rushed into battle and vented his anger on the Trojans, particularly on Hector, who lost his life there.

To children, The Iliad and Odyssey taught both history, geography, and also the conduct expected of any worthy Greek. Adults themselves drew lessons from Homer’s work. There were always, here or there, one or two verses that provided a solution to their problems.

The Iliad and Odyssey, like The Iliad, recounts adventures of times past: those of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, who wandered for ten years after the fall of Troy. Cursed by the sea god, Poseidon, poor Odysseus endured a thousand trials. He had to face storms, manage to escape shipwrecks, and deal with impossible lands where his bad luck forced him to land.

Once, he was hunted by cannibals. Another time, he had to fight the Cyclops, famous giants who had only one eye in the middle of their forehead. Malevolent witches took on the appearance of beautiful girls to charm him.

Finally, Poseidon, who held a grudge, did his best to send him to his demise. Athena, however, the goddess of wisdom, came to his aid. He finally managed to return home where Penelope awaited him with a patience worthy of praise from such a beautiful wife. Odysseus then began to administer his kingdom very kindly. He had had enough of travels. This did not prevent him, from time to time, from sighing at the memory of some pleasant adventure.
