Simultaneously, Augustus tackled the empire’s issues. He began by clearing the roads of highwaymen and the seas of pirates. Gradually, he assumed control of all provinces without encountering any resistance. Naturally, he didn’t govern personally but appointed capable and honest administrators who were beyond reproach.

This marked the inception of a civil service, an organization where carefully selected officials dedicated their lives to managing state affairs. Augustus’s greatest merit, however, was maintaining peace. Thanks to him, farmers could sow their fields without fear of enemy troops trampling their crops or civil wars devastating them.

Gradually, Augustus withdrew his legions from the peninsula and distant provinces, directing them to the borders of the vast empire. There, their mission was to defend it against possible incursions by barbarians or the greed of Eastern kings. Many people in the empire felt as grateful to Augustus as to the gods: security and peace were the invaluable gifts they had received from him! Rome could only rejoice in having allowed such a man to retain power.

Once Augustus had established a government capable of protecting this precious peace, he deemed himself satisfied. He then undertook to relate what had happened in Rome during his time in power. If Uncle Caesar, the prolific author of the Gallic War, could have glimpsed his nephew’s writing, he would undoubtedly have been very surprised.

Augustus was not one for verbosity. What he had scribbled was so brief that the draft text could be copied onto just two small bronze tablets. Let’s quote one of the last paragraphs written by Augustus: “While I was consul for the thirteenth time, the senate, the knights, and the people honored me with the title of Father of the Country.” And this title seemed to flatter him more than any other honorific distinction. Augustus died in 14 AD. For nearly forty-five years, he had been a true pater familias for Rome.
