History – The political struggle in Rome

Watching men, always men, fighting each other, eventually became tiresome. So, in the arena, wild beasts were pitted against humans. Politicians, in constant rivalry, continuously dug into their coffers to hire more gladiators or import new animals from Africa. Yet, the people, while protesting, continued to participate in the government of the republic through their votes. The plebeians, greedy and selfish, cordially detested the rich and the senators.

The problem was, they lacked both the stature to rise to their level and the ability to do without them. Senators, full of arrogance and extreme conservatives, detested the populace as cordially as they were hated by it, but they needed their votes and feared their wrath. A third group, the knights, once formed the Roman cavalry. Now, having become the businessmen of the city, they represented the intermediary class between patricians and plebeians.

During elections, hatreds flared. Disturbances, violence, bloody battles in the streets – it was not uncommon to witness all of this. Of course, there were still wise and honest citizens in Rome. Unfortunately, they were scarcely listened to. Sometimes, just to shut them up for good, they were assassinated. In 133 B.C., Tiberius Gracchus, a former officer, dared to propose a law to provide land for homeless soldiers.

In this way, he explained, the unfortunate would settle down, earn their living, and stop begging on street corners. Rome, he further declared, owed them that much in exchange for their past services. Carried away by the strength of his convictions as well as his eloquent speech, Tiberius Gracchus thus addressed a large crowd in the Forum. This earned him election as tribune of the people by the Assembly. And he was assassinated by the Senate.
