As Rome ascended to power, the accumulation of wealth became intertwined with the institution of slavery, shaping the social fabric in profound ways. Exploring the intricacies of this relationship offers insights into the complexities of Roman life and its enduring legacy.

History – Wealth and Slavery in Rome

In the years leading up to Rome’s ascent, the republic had always managed to fend off invasions and overcome the worst disasters. But now, the city itself was changing. Businessmen and politicians, having amassed fortunes in the provinces, returned to Rome to dwell in lavish palaces where dozens of slaves handled domestic chores. Slavery had been a part of Roman life for ages. Every farmer, every artisan had one or two slaves to assist them. Prisoners sold as slaves came from various backgrounds: soldiers captured in battle, as well as women, men, and children brought from conquered cities.

Even during rare periods of peace, the influx of slaves did not dwindle. Bold pirates raided coastal towns and abducted their inhabitants. The unfortunate sold as slaves knew that their fate depended on two things: their ability to serve their master… and the character of the master! It was a matter of luck. Some masters whipped and worked their slaves to death. Others, on the contrary, treated them with some kindness. Rich Romans proudly showcased the skills of their favorite slaves: tutors, scribes with elegant handwriting, singers who could entertain at dinner parties, dancers, and more.

The quality of a household’s slaves generally reflected on its master. Thus, he took great care of them: feeding them well and ensuring they were properly dressed. A slave with business acumen could further improve his lot. It was not uncommon for his master to put him in charge of a small shop. The slave then had the right to keep a portion of the profits for himself. When he had saved enough, he could buy his freedom. Some slaves were also freed upon the death of a master they had served well.

Most freedmen remained in Rome, working for themselves as shopkeepers, artisans, or employees. Some established themselves as doctors or teachers. A few even amassed considerable fortunes, taking their place in the city’s new and splendid quarters. The face of Rome was changing, with the influx of wealth, slaves, and foreigners.

The city’s citizens were also evolving rapidly. Families now readily traded homemade clothes for silky, rich fabrics. Roman frugality was becoming a thing of the past. The wealthy traveled in luxurious carriages. Lastly, Romans lavished themselves with jewels for their wives and competed for the most learned Greek slaves to serve as instructors for their children.
