Summary : History – Zenobia and Rome

As the Roman Empire teetered on the brink of collapse, provincial unrest added to its woes. In this narrative, we witness defiance against Roman authority, epitomized by Queen Zenobia of Palmyra’s audacious bid for independence. With the empire’s legions diverted to internal power struggles, barbarian invaders seized opportunities, breaching once-impregnable defenses. Zenobia’s revolt rallied support across Egypt and Asia Minor, challenging Rome’s grip on its territories. As the provinces erupted in rebellion, natural disasters and the onset of plague further weakened Rome’s hold. This period marks a pivotal moment in history, signaling the decline of Rome’s once-unassailable power.

History – Zenobia and Rome

In the provinces of the empire, the situation was no better. People openly disobeyed the laws. What was the point of observing them when no one seemed to care about enforcing them anymore? When the legions left the borders to join the battles raging around the throne, barbarian invaders hastened to take advantage. In Britain, Hadrian’s Wall was partially demolished. At the eastern border, troops from various Asian kings finished off other already crumbling defenses.

In Syria, the dark and beautiful Queen Zenobia of Palmyra proclaimed the independence of her country. Claiming descent from Cleopatra, she incited a revolt against the empire. The entire Egypt and a good half of Asia Minor supported her. For three years, the lovely queen of the East gave Rome a hard time and stood up to the legions.

It took the arrival of Emperor Aurelian to defeat her. Palmyra was completely burned, and Zenobia, adorned with very decorative golden chains, was taken to Rome. There, she gracefully adorned the triumph of her (less than gallant) conqueror.

After that, Aurelian exiled her to Tibur where she sadly ended her days. Nevertheless, her bold revolt bore fruit.

Galvanized by her example, other countries rose up. Fear and misery began to haunt the cities. The plague made its terrible appearance, from all sides at once.

For fifteen years, it cheerfully piled up corpses throughout the empire. And as misfortune never comes alone, earthquakes of unimaginable force destroyed a large number of cities in Asia. Meanwhile, in Rome, the puppet emperors continued to succeed one another.
