Summary : History – Zenon

In the bustling streets of ancient Athens, amidst the philosophical fervor of the time, emerged a diverse array of thinkers whose teachings would shape the course of Western thought. From the asceticism of Diogenes to the tranquility of Epicurus and the rationality of Zeno, each philosopher offered a unique perspective on how to navigate life’s complexities.

Their ideas not only influenced their contemporaries but continue to resonate with modern minds seeking wisdom and guidance. Through exploring the lives and teachings of these philosophers, we gain insight into the enduring quest for meaning and fulfillment that transcends the boundaries of time and place.

However, not all citizens of Athens dreamt of surrounding themselves with walls. They went to listen to Zeno, a young man who arrived in Athens as a merchant and stayed on as a philosopher. Zeno counted statesmen, officials, officers, and businessmen among his friends. Their group became known as the Stoics. They were so named because of the stoa, or portico, where they usually met—the famous Pecile portico in Athens. Zeno claimed to be tired of hearing Athenians lament the weakness of their city, preventing them from becoming free and powerful.

He attempted to convince them that they possessed a remarkable strength within themselves: the power to reason as human beings! He reminded them that no tyrant, no external will, could affect the course of their thoughts. When people came to him with their fears and sorrows, he advised them to forget their worries because, ultimately, they were inconsequential. And he tried to explain why. “There exists a very wise god,” he said, “who has conceived the vast plan that encompasses all past, present, and future history.

Although we cannot grasp the whole, we can use our reason to understand the part that concerns us and discover what is expected of us. When we think we have achieved this, we must strive to perform our task as well as possible, willingly accepting the trials that await us. For this, all we need to say is, ‘If this is the will of God, then I must accept it.’ At that moment, grief and suffering will matter little.” This was easier said than done… It required a man of iron will to convince himself that the pain torturing him was inconsequential because it was part of the divine plan.

Nevertheless, Zeno’s doctrine gave courage to many people. Numerous Athenians became Stoics. However, Greeks with ambition did not linger in Athens. They set off for Antioch, Alexandria, or any other great city where a strong-willed individual could make their mark. All these cities, founded by Alexander, bore little resemblance to Athens. They were not called polis but cosmopolis, meaning “city of the world.” Those heading to Alexandria could see it from afar long before their ship reached its port.

At night, while still far from the coast, they could see the light of the giant lighthouse illuminating the sea. And in the morning, as their ship anchored in the port, they could behold this prodigious lighthouse, as tall as a four-story house, which was considered a marvel of architecture. Yet, this was only a taste of what the city held in store for them.
